Cette situation est li\u00e9e \u00e0 des conditions climatiques exceptionnelles : modification du r\u00e9gime des pr\u00e9cipitations sur l\u2019ann\u00e9e, temp\u00e9ratures \u00e9lev\u00e9es, vents s\u00e9chants\u2026 le tout install\u00e9 dans la dur\u00e9e. La s\u00e9cheresse qui impacte directement la production agricole est <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inrae.fr\/actualites\/quest-ce-que-secheresse\">la s\u00e9cheresse \u00e9daphique, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire du sol<\/a>.\u00a0 Elle r\u00e9sulte d\u2019un manque d\u2019eau disponible dans le sol pour les plantes, qui entra\u00eene des cons\u00e9quences sur toute la production v\u00e9g\u00e9tale, et indirectement la production animale.<\/p>\n<h2>Des s\u00e9cheresses de plus en plus fr\u00e9quentes et cons\u00e9quentes<\/h2>\n<p>Selon les chiffres de l\u2019EDO, l\u2019European Drought Observatory, qui \u00e9tudie l&rsquo;humidit\u00e9 au sol depuis 2012, la situation de s\u00e9cheresse perdure depuis une dizaine d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es sur le continent. Plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment, depuis 2018, il y a, chaque ann\u00e9e, un mois o\u00f9 la s\u00e9cheresse concerne plus de 40 % des sols europ\u00e9ens. Ce qui n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas le cas les six ann\u00e9es d\u2019avant, de 2012 \u00e0 2018. Ailleurs dans le monde, le nord du Br\u00e9sil subissait \u00e0 l\u2019automne 2023 un \u00e9pisode de s\u00e9cheresse sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, malmenant les populations ainsi que la faune et la flore.<\/p>\n<h2>Le stress hydrique, un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne insidieux<\/h2>\n<p>Le terme \u201cstress hydrique\u201d d\u00e9signe quant \u00e0 lui un \u00e9tat de la plante dont les besoins en eau d\u00e9passent ce que le sol est capable de fournir. Pour imager, les plantes ont \u201csoif\u201d mais les r\u00e9serves sont insuffisantes. M\u00eame si une s\u00e9cheresse induit naturellement du stress hydrique, celui-ci peut survenir du fait de quelques jours, voire une seule journ\u00e9e sans eau, et suffire \u00e0 impacter le d\u00e9veloppement de la plante, donc les rendements. En effet, les plantes vont donc devoir activer des m\u00e9canismes pour se pr\u00e9server. Le manque d\u2019eau entame le potentiel de rendement, plus ou moins selon le stade de d\u00e9veloppement de la culture. M\u00eame courte et ponctuelle, une p\u00e9riode de stress hydrique suffit \u00e0 causer des pertes de rendement si elle survient \u00e0 un moment-cl\u00e9 du cycle de vie de la plante, comme la floraison\u00a0ou le remplissage des grains.<\/p>\n<h2>Les sols \u00e0 faible r\u00e9serve utile, plus vuln\u00e9rables<\/h2>\n<p>Les parcelles \u00e0 faible r\u00e9serve utile sont particuli\u00e8rement sujettes au stress hydrique. Si le sol ne parvient pas \u00e0 retenir suffisamment d&rsquo;eau, les plantes peuvent rapidement se retrouver p\u00e9nalis\u00e9es. C\u2019est aussi le cas apr\u00e8s des pluies de faible intensit\u00e9. Le sol semble humide en surface, mais reste sec au niveau des racines et en profondeur. Un fort vent peut \u00e9galement ass\u00e9cher rapidement la terre. A l\u2019oppos\u00e9, les pluies trop fortes ruissellent et ne p\u00e9n\u00e8trent pas dans la terre, surtout sur des sols durs.
